Today, Tascha decided to play mellophone in Marching Band, instead of flute, and in doing so fulfilled my desires that I've held for the horn section since I was a sophomore. By adding Tascha to the section, that brings to the total number of mellophones up to seven. That is, arranged by age: Me, Megan, Tascha, Paige, Heather, Diane, and Joseph. Go horns!
Now you might be asking yourself, why does Jacob care so much about having a large section of horns? This want and desire comes from a horn section of many years ago, a section that few in this band still remember. In the 1999-2000 school year (my freshman year), there were NINE horns in the band program, including myself. For Marching Band, I marched on sax (I didn't know how to play horn yet) and another of the nine (geez, sounds like Lord of the Rings) was our Drum Major. This brought the nine horns down to seven mellophones. I can testify to all of you who don't remember, that John, Jared, Adam, Marc, Tasha, Christen, and Tiffy all made up a fantastic section.
At the end of that year, John, Jared, Adam, Marc, and Romi graduated, and Tiffy moved away. We went from a section of nine to a section of three. Erica moved in and brought us to four. We survived, but the glory, the power, and the legacy of the horns and the mellophones that we once had became lost.
Now, however, is the dawn of our return. There are seven mellophones. There'll probly be six varsity horns, once Marching Band is over. The horns are back, with a vengeance. We're a significant and important part of the ensemble again, not just Jacob and his psycho sisters.
I just wanted to formally announce our return to glory, and how excited I am about how well I think the horns are gonna do this year. Non-horn players probably don't really care all that much about this rallying of horn power. However, if any of you actually read this, you should understand that a good horn section and good horn presence improves the whole band. Both the Marching Band and the Symphonic Band will have a richer, more beautiful sound with a large horn presence, and judges will give us more points for the GE in Marching Band for a strong horn sound.
In short, a rise in the power and glory of the horns means a rise in the glory and power of the band. Mr. Myers was right today. It's gonna be a great ride.
